He looks up at the iconic Orkney sandstone pillars, rising above the pounding waves of the North Atlantic, proud but defiant. Climbing it at the age of 80 is an almost daunting prospect and a moment to reflect on a lifetime of epic expeditions and first ascents on some of the world’s most challenging mountains.
The rain driven by a relentless wind hits her face hiding tears of pain. Recent events are about to overtake it. He remembers being the first to step on the top of the Old Man of Today, 50 long years ago when he had youth on his side. As a pioneer and adventurer, call it back. Seeking catharsis once more, he ponders whether he has the strength to stand on the Old Man just one more time…
Stories of friendship, love, risk and devastating loss run deep in this intimate journey of one man’s dream to lead. The drive for exploration is reflected in the first British ascent of the Eiger North Wall, new routes on Mont Blanc, the ascent of ‘The Old Man of Hoy’ and then on to the larger ranges where you are the first to stand on the virgin summits of Annapurna 2, Nuptse and Paine’s Central Tower, followed by the success of a historic expedition on the south face of Annapurna 1 and the SW face of Everest.
The film looks back, from his rock climbing days in the UK to visionary ascents in the high peaks of the Himalayas, and shares the remarkable and moving life of one of the world’s best-known mountaineers: Sir Chris Bonington.
