Nicknamed “The God of the Mountain,” the Citadel is an impressive 10,000-foot peak in one of the remaining pristine corners of the Great Alaska Range: the Neacola Mountains. Due to their typically poor conditions and remote location, they are largely unexplored. Matt Helliker and Jon Bracey are one of the UK’s most formidable partnerships in alpine climbing with many world class ascents to their names from the UK to the Alps and larger ranges. His goal is to make the first ascent of the extraordinary 1,200 m long northwest ridge. Adventure filmmaker Alastair Lee embarked on this project with the goal of pushing the boundaries and capturing grueling alpine climbing like never before. Employing the latest cineflex technology combined with innovative vision, the end results are truly amazing; the next dimension in mountain cinema. ‘Citadel’ is an impressive image. To match its visual prowess, ‘Citadel’ is laced with a strong narrative sense. Like all good stories, it is character driven and centers on one of the most unlikely but successful partnerships in world mountaineering. The one with Matt Helliker and Jon Bracey. The stage is set to explain why two accomplished climbers must yet search for new lines in unfamiliar territory where the odds are stacked against them. We take a ride in the front seat and are with Matt and Jon every step of the way through all the difficulties and struggles, hopes and disappointments. What unfolds is a classic story arc where success is snatched from the jaws of defeat.
